Books are precious... that's the saying my friend Cheryl is always telling her grand daughter when she gets a little rough on her reading material. I love it. I've even stole it and have tried to instill the message on Oliver as well. I don't know how it's working on Mercedes lately but Oliver doesn't seem to care in the least.
As you can see, Oliver has made a fair attempt at wrecking several books around our house. There are more but these are the ones I could find quickly for the picture. A couple of them were beyond repair so they ended up in the garbage. He's broken spines and pulled out pages (from board books, I don't know how he does that) Right now he's very into the books that have flaps to look under. Unfortunately, as much as he likes reading them with me, I think he likes it better when he can rip the flaps right off the page. He of course does this when I'm in the other room and will bring me the the flaps like he's so proud of what he's done.
I'm not sure how to go about dealing with this. I'm sure all kids do it and he's only 17 months, it'll be a while before he really gets the books are precious message. In the meantime, do I put them all away so they are out of reach unless he's with an adult? I hate to do that because I like that he looks at them on his own too. Or do I just chalk the losses up to casualties of babyhood.

Hunter went through a vicious stage where he would break board books. If he was breaking a book, I will tell me he was hurting it and would take it away for a while. He got the idea after a while.
Hunter is really good with flap books, however those books where you open then up and a 3-D scenes pops up do not survive in this house. I cannot get him to just look instead of rip.
It will improve with time!
I have had to throw out my fair share of books since Paige was born, and even more so with Hanna - she is super rough with books, and although I give her 'heck' when she does it, I do just let it go...they both love to look at books, and spend a fair amount of time doing so, so I just take it as one of those things that happen. If they had any other toys that would made of paper we wouldn't expect them to last very long...and like Kara said, eventually Oliver will be more interested in the actual book than the sound of ripping paper!
