Favorite Book- River God by Wilbur Smith
I've read this book at least 3 times, maybe 4. Set in ancient Egypt, it has love, war, humor and great quests. If you happen to take my suggestion I will ask that you stick with it because I'll admit, the first 100 pages or so are a little slow. After that, I promise, you'll fall in love with Taita just like I did. The sequel, The Seventh Scroll is set in modern times and is actually a better book. I've read it just as many times but have a soft spot for the first. The next two in the series are not worth the read in my opinion so I wouldn't waste your time.

OMG -- my very favourite book ever! Have you read the others in the series - Seventh Scroll, Warlock, and Quest.
Dochri, I loved the Seventh Scroll too but I didn't care for Warlock and I hated Quest. It just got way too silly for me. And he deviated way too far from the original Taita character.
rQuest did get a little silly at the end but I still loved the characters. I would love to see a new book in the series. His lastest, is actually quite good.
